Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes using machines, particularly computer systems. It involves the use of expert systems, natural language processing, voice recognition, and computer vision to name a few. AI is becoming increasingly prevalent in many advanced and emerging economies, and it is changing the way we work. Aristotle's development of syllogism and his use of deductive reasoning were a major milestone in humanity's quest to understand its own intelligence.
Today, there are many AI companies that are working on very intelligent technology. AI refers to software technologies that make a robot or computer act and think like a human. As such, many technology companies from different industries are investing in AI technologies. However, some experts believe that the term artificial intelligence is too linked to popular culture, leading to unrealistic expectations about how AI will affect the workplace and life in general.
Many economists and sociologists fear that AI will eventually take over most jobs. The main limitation of defining AI as “building machines that are intelligent” is that it doesn't really explain what AI is or what makes a machine intelligent. The costs of AI hardware, software, and personnel can be expensive, so many vendors include AI components in their standard offerings or provide access to artificial intelligence as a service (AiaaS) platforms. To create superintelligence by imitating the human brain, powerful hardware and an “adequate initial architecture” with a “rich flow of sensory information” are needed.
The modern field of artificial intelligence began in 1956 during a summer conference at Dartmouth College. For now, this is a hypothetical situation in which machines are fully aware of themselves and surpass human intelligence in practically every field. Rather than types of artificial intelligence, these are stages in which AI can evolve and only one of them is possible right now. All but the simplest human behaviors are attributed to intelligence, while even the most complicated behavior of insects is never taken as an indication of intelligence.
